An Afterthought

Standing in the doorway

I had a sudden qualm

About what was to come.

Things have been strained

Between the two of us

And this talk would not help.

I feel second class

Or sometimes even lower –

Do I even matter to you?

I feel like an afterthought,

Only there when you remember me.

The rest of the time,

Just an object put in the corner.

I need to know if I matter –

If not,

I need the strength to ask,

Just let me go…
