A Diamond In The Rough

the door creaked open
dust covered the floors
he left footprints as he entered
plaster lay crumbled on the floor
sunlight streaked through broken shutters
years of decay spoiled the house
but under the tarnish and cobwebs
he saw hopes for renewal
like an old coin or gem
only needing to be polished
it’s worth was underneath
in hard wood floors
a grand staircase
and a stained glass bay window
only pieces of the future
he saw shining through
he rolled up his sleeves
and picked up a broom
