Anxiety

My nerves are frazzled

That is just the way I am

Stress weighs heavy on me

I try the best I can

To handle what comes at me

Day by harrowing day

But sometimes it gets me

And I don’t have a say

As to what my body does

When a panic attack begins

I sit back and surrender

And hope that it soon ends

Commencement

It was a beautiful day.  The sun was shinning and the birds singing.  A short man stood before the group in caps and gowns.  “Today is an auspicious day to take that step into the future.  You have learned a great many things and will be able to take those things forward with you into whatever you become.  You will one day look back on high school…”  The speaker droned on.  Karen was just glad she got here.  A C- in world history about dragged her under, but her A+ in both Algebra and Creative Writing had saved the day.

Words Thrown

Photo by Vera Arsic on Pexels.com

He said

She said

Back and forth the words fly

They have known each other

For so many years

They can speak nonsense

In the heat of the moment

And still they both know

What the other is saying

It may just sound like

Anger infused gibberish

But they know

Just the right words to throw

To hurt each other

One of these days

Their love will take a deadly hit

And in any language

It will be

The end

Hear Me Roar

According to Oxford Languages lionize is to “give a lot of public attention and approval to (someone); treat as a celebrity.”

I also learned there is a rock band called Lionize.

But being my Dad’s daughter I love a good pun or play on words so this is my response to lionize…

Not Another One

“Did you see they tore down the flower shop in Northwood?”

“I knew they were closing, but I didn’t know the building was gone.”

“Yeah I have heard a couple of rumors about other businesses building there.”

“Oh I hope it is something local and not another one of those huge chain franchises.”

“I heard both a coffee shop and a car wash.”

“We have so many coffee shops and car washes both.”

“Well we don’t really have many coffee shops on the northside of town, they are all downtown.”

“I guess that is true.”

“I will drink to that!”

Inhaling Fumes

Photo by Mister Mister on Pexels.com

I can’t stand it

Like toxic fumes

From a running car

Breathing in

Your alcohol heavy breath

Is almost enough to

Get me drunk too

But I won’t drink anymore

A stupid voice inside

Tells me then you

Might stop too

But that was just

Another broken dream

For you never did stop

And those fumes

Were a big part of why

I walked out the door

Never At Rest

I still see her body

Lifeless in the chair

It was so surreal

Just sitting and talking

Like there wasn’t

A dead body in the room

To say I was uneasy

Is an understatement

But I didn’t know better

To leave the room

When they came to take her

I thought they were not

Gentle enough

When they moved her

She was my mom still

I knew she couldn’t feel

But I watched and wanted

To protect her body

Like she had protected me for years

When they zipped the bag

I turned away

It was final

And I have to see that image

Played over and over

Especially around the holidays

When I miss her most

Her body was laid to rest

But my memories never will be
