A to Z Challenge – O

The letter O …

The time is almost here.  The calendar says it is Spring, now if we could just get the weather to cooperate.  We had light snow this week, but tomorrow it is supposed to return to the 60’s.  We have had little tastes of Spring here and there, then Winter seems to sneak back in.  This time I hope someone closes the door and locks it tight until late Fall.

Once the windows are open, I can hear the birds chirping and in about a month the lilacs will fill the air with their perfume.  It is time to think about heading outdoors again.  Taking a short walk (I think all I can handle is short) trying to find my health again.  See the first signs of the season – the neighbors tulips blooming, the daffodils on the corner, and the first dandelions popping up in the yards.

Once warmer days come there is the opportunity for morel mushrooms to pop up.  And more birds will fly back from the South.  The squirrels and rabbits will come out in force.  And the park by the river may even have a stray deer.

I can take my camera and capture moments of beauty I see in trees, flowers, the sky and more.  To spend time outdoors brings me a little closer to the wonders all around we are usually too busy to see.  Those moments I will be able to spend outdoors will bring me a peace I can find no other way.  My gratitude today goes to being outdoors.

Happy and Grateful – Day 293

The month of October is upon us.  Fall is in full swing with the leaves gathering on the lawn… maybe a pile or two to run through even.  The evenings are getting dark earlier as the days grow shorter.  And a few of us look forward to a good scare with Halloween coming this month.  Everyday has at least some small portion of good in it.  I am looking for that good with this challenge to find my happiness and gratitude every day.  Join in with the challenge by commenting or writing your own blog… let’s find some goodness today.

It was almost too warm today… but it sounds like that will not be a problem again soon.  We are headed for a drop in temperatures after rain tomorrow.  So it is a good thing I got my time by my window with the fresh air today.  I am grateful for the time to hear the birds singing again.  The language on the playground however after school… that was a whole different feeling it gave me.  About sent shivers down my spine.

I did a little tidying up the apartment, until my back told me I had done enough.  Then my daughter came over to wash some laundry and watch the soap.  We ordered some pizza and shared a nice dinner together.  She had to leave pretty early as she has to open at her coffee shop in the early morning.  But it always makes me happy to see her.

Tonight is kind of rough for me… just feel a little out of sorts.  But being able to look back and find the good in the day helps.  I need to take my night meds and try to sleep soon.  Maybe read a few more posts before I get too tired.  Thank you to all who take the time to read these.  I wonder how the numbers really play out.  But I still feel a little connection has been made and that is something to be happy and grateful about.

Remember to find your happiness and feel your gratitude.  Have a good night/day.

Happy and Grateful – Day 234

Seven months are gone now and surprisingly I am still plugging along with this challenge to post about my happiness and gratitude every day this year.  August brings the state fair here in Iowa and lots of heat and humidity.  It is the time to see the back to school shopping start with kids dreading it and parents loving it.  As I continue my challenge I hope you will take a minute to reflect on your day too.  You can even share your happiness and gratitude here in the comments or on your own blog.  There is good in every day!

It was a really nice morning.  Had the windows open once again with lower temperatures so I was able to hear the birds singing today.  I spent the morning next to the window beside my desk while I made two cards.  I still have a couple to make… one for my grandmother’s 100th birthday.  It is about 2 weeks away.  I used to visit at least once a week when I was working, but haven’t been able to go as often now.  It makes me real sad to see how she just “gave up” after she broke her hip.  She used to be such a strong woman; both of my grandmothers were.  I am trying to get with my sister to do something special for her on her birthday

I did a little writing after making the cards this morning and it was like something flipped in me around that time and I began to have anxiety over this beautiful day.  My mood dropped and by the time I picked up my boyfriend I felt pretty low.  I tried really hard to listen for the birds singing as that made me happy this morning, but it was turning into a losing battle.

The night kind of fell apart over, of all things, the volume of the TV.  My boyfriend has trouble hearing it and with a headache I was not giving it much volume.  Tonight my moment of gratitude was when I could finally turn it down after he had hiked the volume greatly.  My head is still pounding and I think the only thing that will help it is sleep so…

Remember to find your happiness and feel your gratitude.  Have a good night/day!

Happy and Grateful – Day 126

May has arrived and I hope it brings lots of Spring cheer with it.  I am in my fifth month now of taking time to acknowledge the things that make me happy and grateful every day… almost half way to my goal of a full year.  If you want to join in on this challenge please add your thoughts in the comments or start your own blog.  There is a lot to be happy and grateful for!

Today was another day of fresh air and sunshine.  Didn’t get to spend much time in it, but admired it from afar I guess you could say.  Our original plans of checking out the first farmers market of the season fell apart when we slept through the alarm clock… oops!  So it ended up being much more of a quiet day and my boyfriend even took a couple of hours nap.

We did venture out to get some dinner and grabbed a sandwich for my Dad’s dinner too.  It was pretty amazing how quiet the streets seemed for a Saturday night, maybe everyone was still home finishing yard work?

I was happy we tried to carry on with our weekly card games we have played the last two weekends.  Since it was just my boyfriend and I we did a couple of games of cribbage.  Maybe we will try canasta next time.

I was happy to have another weekend that included some time away from computers to play cards.  I was grateful to hear the birds singing another beautiful day’s songs.

Happy and Grateful – Days 122 and 123

May has arrived and I hope it brings lots of Spring cheer with it.  I am in my fifth month now of taking time to acknowledge the things that make me happy and grateful every day… almost half way to my goal of a full year.  If you want to join in on this challenge please add your thoughts in the comments or start your own blog.  There is a lot to be happy and grateful for!

I feel like I am playing a game of catch up this week and never getting anywhere.  So here I am combining Tuesday and Wednesday in hopes of finally getting on the right track.

Both days brought some sunshine to me which was a nice change.  I had windows open to hear the birds singing followed by the children screaming when school gets out.  There is one girl who 90% of the time is screaming or yelling to be heard in the group of children playing…. all I can think is that my folks would never let me scream like that at the playground all the time.  But sadly there are often no parents around watching the kids.

Aside from a little fresh air, Dad had another doctor appointment and his weekly coffee “meeting” today.  So there were errands to run.  I also popped into our local library today to find a couple of DVDs to check out.  I love our library.  Besides the tons of books they have well stocked CD and DVD collections to check out.  They have plenty of events at the library.  Great programs for kids and families.  And even a concert or two in the auditorium.  It is a great library.

So my happy has to come from the sunshine and bird songs.  And I will say it a thousand times, I am so grateful for our public library!  Now I think I will read a little and head off to dreamland.

Happy and Grateful – Day 110

We have reached the month of April and I am still on course to post daily with my happiness and gratitude I have found.  Please join in if you feel like doing this too by sharing in the comments or on your own blog.  There is so much to be happy and grateful for.

Had a cold front come through today bringing clouds with it.  We were able to glimpse a little of the sun and just a touch of blue skies before it was time for sunset.  It was still warm enough for me to walk to my doctor’s appointment in just a t-shirt.  It was on that walk I discovered another sign of spring.  The dandelions have started to bloom.

I had about an hour before my appointment where I was just checking emails by the open window listening to the birds sing… I think that is one of the best things about the outdoors.  I often think of my grandfather when the birds start to sing.  He would sit on the porch at the cabin they had on the Missouri River and name each bird that was singing from their sound only.  I was a kid in awe of this ability.  To this day it is still only crows or pigeons that I can recognize.,, wish I had learned more from him.

I am happy I can hear the birds singing where I live.  I am grateful for the love of nature I have in part thanks to my grandparents.  But now the birds are in their nests for the night and that should be where I am headed… well, maybe I’ll read just a few more posts.
