Under The Weather

the noise came from deep in her chest
a rattling cough that burned her lungs
she lay in bed with fever’s sweat
shivering under her layers of covers
body aching in every joint and muscle
sinuses pressing back in pain
the flu was ravaging her body
making it nearly impossible to breathe
suddenly she sneezed
her whole body shaking
followed by another
feeling like ripping tissue in her throat
like it was made of paper, not flesh
three days were like this before her fever broke
she awoke from sleep that was finally peaceful
and mumbled under her breath
“next year I get a flu shot.”
