The alarm clock is my enemy… I am not a morning person, never have been. I have to set multiple alarms anymore if I do need to be awake for one thing or another. But I am not surprised, I grew up in a family of night owls. My Dad spent many years working 11pm to 7am. He would be there to tuck us into bed at night and wake us up in the morning.
I do have a couple of great late night memories. We often would stay up late playing a game of Shanghai Rummy in the summer time on Dad’s night off. And one night we stayed up all night (the whole family and a couple of friends) trying to decipher a text adventure game called Kidnapped. We discussed each level of this high rise we woke up in and had to make it out of somehow. I THINK the level that took us the longest involved giving a guard dog a sleeping pill in hamburger. There was also a level where we had to do something with a fish tank that had piranhas in it.
Even visiting my aunts, uncles and grandparents out of town we would stay up late talking or playing games. I truly came from a family or a parliament of night owls!
I am a night owl. I come from a family of night owls. My Dad used to work the 11 to 7 over night shift and mom would often be up late listening to the scanner while he was working. So, I grew up with a night time influence. As we were getting ready for bed, Dad was just getting up and starting his “day” so, we wanted to stay up later of course to talk to Dad. Some times Mom let us get away with it, but not often if it was a school night.
On the weekends and during summer vacation we didn’t have a set bedtime that I remember. I remember so many nights trying to stay up late enough to watch the Creature Feature of TV. I rarely made it that late and I probably would have been too scared to sleep if I had.
As I became an adult I tried to work night shifts as I would be up late and sleep in. But the real world is not built for night owls and I did struggle to get to work when I had morning shifts.
I do still struggle with mornings. I am a light sleeper but anything before 10 usually has to be done with multiple alarms set. I am usually up until about 2 in the morning. And I really like the quiet to think. I feel some of my better writing happens after midnight.
As midnight approaches I draw on reflections of the day. I take time to read, to write and sadly some night deal with my demons. But I am sure I will always be a night owl. I’ll be 75 in the nursing home with the radio on at midnight tapping my toes and wishing I could still dance to the music. Are you a night owl too?
We have reached the month of April and I am still on course to post daily with my happiness and gratitude I have found. Please join in if you feel like doing this too by sharing in the comments or on your own blog. There is so much to be happy and grateful for.
I am getting too old for this… last night it was just my friend, boyfriend and myself that stayed up late playing card games. I have napped twice trying to catch up. Of course part of that may be the fact I have finally managed to catch the cold my boyfriend had last week, UGH! So it has been a very lazy day. As a matter of fact my boyfriend is now napping too.
Yes, another night of Shanghai Rummy – a 10 hand card game. It was not as late as we only played one game not two, but it was still into the AM hours. I still didn’t win, but it is all about having fun and that I did. I was happy to play a favorite game again and grateful I was surrounded by special people in my life for another night. We’ll see what tonight holds “in the cards” … tee hee!
