Monday Rewrite

The teacher stood at the front of the room holding a stack of papers in her hand.  The class had just turned in reports on the animal of their choice.  The teacher told the class, “Now remember you will get these papers back on Monday to write a second draft.  I am not only looking for grammar errors, but for the use of extraneous information that just pads the word count.”

The bell then rang, and she dismissed the class.  Two girls looked at each other with a grin and one said, “Extraneous information, I think we’re in trouble.”

My Favorite Store

“Mom I have to do a display board for my report.  Can we go and get some supplies?”

“Yes, I need to get some supplied myself for my Christmas cards I am making.  Let’s go get some things at Hobby Lobby.”

“But you are not going to take forever, are you?  You were in there an hour last time I went with you.”

“There is a lot to see in the store.  And besides, it was only 50 minutes not an hour.”

“Picky, picky!  Hey, can we get some of those lights to use on the board?”

“Sure, we can.”

(100 words)

This could have easily been a conversation between me and my daughter when she was in school.  I fall into some weird time warp in the store than makes the time pass without me noticing it.  Longest I have been in there is just a little over an hour…and it felt like maybe 15 minutes.  Yes, I know I have a problem… ha, ha, ha.

The Report

“This is going to be easy,” Teresa said.  “I can find all the information from Wikipedia and be done with this report in no time.”

“It would be better if you used different sources,” Patty said.

“But Mom, I really want to go to Donna’s tonight since she is going to her Grandma’s house with her parents this weekend.  This will be faster if I just stick with one resource.”

“You have written enough reports already to know you will get a lower grade if you don’t expand your search online for more than one source.” Patty suddenly got an idea and said, “Why not try the Intrepid museum website to reference more about the aircraft carrier?  You know that is a reputable source since you went there last summer.”

“Ok Mom, but that is all I am doing, then can I please go see Donna,” Teresa asked with a smile?

Patty shook her head, “Just remember she leaves in the morning so don’t stay too late.”
