Fandango’s Flash Fiction Challenge – #37

He stood still on top of the bridge, looking at his grey shadow.  It looked so plain and dreary, just like him.  He felt so very alone.  Just two days ago she had left him.  Claimed he was sick.  He didn’t feel sick.  He just felt like he needed another drink.  Sure, he had a few drinks every night, but he couldn’t be an alcoholic, could he?  That was the word she had used.  It scared him. Made him take a look at himself and he wasn’t sure he liked what he saw.  Could she be right?  It just felt like life was spiraling out of control.  He loved her so much and felt deep guilt thinking he drove her away.

He sighed deeply and looked again at his shadow.  He would have to stop at the liquor store on the way home.  She just didn’t understand.  And the thought of living without her ripped him apart.  There was only one thing that would help, a little bit of vodka.

My Dark Shadow

There she stands

Larger than life

No distinguishing marks

No discernible features

Just another shadow distorted

And without distinction

A nothing much to see

Possibly even something scary

Stretched by the harsh lights

Filling up the sidewalk

She walks beside me

Seeming to float on air

She is only darkness

Devoid of light

She is the dark side of me

She is my shadow

In The Mirror

Standing with a towel

Wrapped around my body

I wipe the mirror of its condensation

I peer through the foggy air

Straining to see myself

The distorted image faces me

Like half a shadow

Only showing part of me

Not the whole picture

It is like my own view

Not quite sure of myself

Not knowing who I am

Like in this foggy bathroom

Eventually the view will clear

And I will see my future

Clearly before me

I only have to believe

The Shadow Knows

I walk in the dark

A shadow walks too

I quicken my step

The shadow does too

I stop to grab my keys

The shadow does too

I continue walking to my car

The shadow walks too

Once more I quicken my step

The shadow does too

I reach my car and shaking quickly get in

The shadow does too

…no matter how I try

The shadow of my former self won’t leave me alone.
