Down to a handful of change
He begins to count
Just enough for bread
And a jar of peanut butter
This has to last him a full week
It’s all he will eat
This is a splurge
Last week he lived
On ramen alone
He can’t recall
When he had vegetables
Fruit would be
A precious dessert
But the heat is still on
and the water still flows
His small apartment is dark
But a place to call home
One more unemployment check
More doors closed in his face
He thinks he might survive
At least until Spring
After that who knows
