Some Things Daily September 30 – #041

I want to try something.  Let’s talk about things.  Things that matter, things are not so important and outright silly things.  Things that are strange and different, things that are timely, things that make us laugh or cry.  Things that are on your mind and mine.  And things that never crossed your mind.  Let’s talk….

In 1822 the first Hispanic elected to Congress was Joseph Marion Hernandez.  In 1918 Woodrow Wilson gives a speech in favor of giving women the right to vote.  And in 1947, for the first time, the World Series was broadcasted on television.  It is international Translation Day, International Lace Day, National Hot Mulled Cider Day, National Extra Virgin Olive Oil Day, Rumi Day and Save Your Photos Day.

Today is also National Pet Tricks Day.  Pets can be such a special part of our lives and brighten an otherwise dreary day.  I know some of you have pets, whether you have them now or had them in the past did you ever have a pet that did special tricks?  Was there a favorite trick that you taught them?  Let’s talk about these things…

Growing up I had a dog that was not very bright, but I was able to teach him how to sit pretty.  Otherwise, I owned many independent cats over the years.  However, that does not mean they have not learned things.  I had a cat that would “be a toddler” for me.  I would pat my legs when I was standing up and he would come over and stretch his paws up like a toddler wanting to be picked up.  I had a cat who would “say please” for his food.  But that was the extent of the tricks my pets knew.

How about you?  Let me know in the comments below or make your own post and give me the link so I can find it.  Thanks for reading and I hope you will talk.

I want to try something.  Let’s talk about things.  Things that matter, things are not so important and outright silly things.  Things that are strange and different, things that are timely, things that make us laugh or cry.  Things that are on your mind and mine.  And things that never crossed your mind.  Let’s talk….

Here we go, taking a look back on a Friday again.  In 1962 Canada launched its first satellite, Alouette 1 to study the earth’s ionosphere.  In 1988 Stacy Allison became the first American woman to climb Mt. Everest.  And in 2008 in the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped for a then record greatest amount in one day of 777.68 points.  Today is a day to celebrate World Heart Day, International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, National Biscotti Day, German Butterbrot Day and Save The Koala Day.

There is one more day that’s near and dear to my heart – National Coffee Day (not to be confused with International Coffee Day which is October 1st).  Coffee has always been a big part of people’s day but with coffee shops on every other corner it is a bigger business now.  Are you a brewed cup purist or are you more of an espresso drink fanatic?  Do you brew at home – by the cup or the pot?  Do you put elaborate orders in at the coffee shop, or do you branch out and try new things?  Let’s talk about these things…

I like both a regular cup of coffee (with a little cream, or black if I am really tired), or many different drinks at the coffee shop (mainly lattes and mochas).  I own a Keurig for by the large cup brew or a small 6 cup pot to last me the day.  I have a sweet tooth so I will often order a specialty drink off the menu.  I even (cover your eyes for this) order a chai tea (a dirty chai – with a shot of espresso) or matcha tea on occasion.  And as the weather turns colder, I may partake in a decaf cup at night.

What about you?  Tell me your thoughts in the comments or write your own National Coffee Day post and link it here so I can find it.  As always thanks for reading and I hope you will talk with me.

I want to try something.  Let’s talk about things.  Things that matter, things are not so important and outright silly things.  Things that are strange and different, things that are timely, things that make us laugh or cry.  Things that are on your mind and mine.  And things that never crossed your mind.  Let’s talk….

In 1965 Fidel Castro announced that anyone in Cuba who wanted to, was free to leave the island.  In 2018 the cargo ship Venta Maersk was the first to use newly opened shipping lanes in the artic as the ice caps had melted enough to allow ships through… a vivid example of Global Warming.  It is World Maritime Day, World Rabies Day, National Good Neighbor Day, and National Strawberry Cream Pie Day.  However, I want to talk about Remember Me Thursday.

Remember Me Thursday is the fourth Thursday of September.  It is a day to shed light on the number of animals at your local shelter that need to be adopted and remembered.  Some animals stay in shelters far too long and some shelters even put them to sleep after a time frame is up without any adoption.   This is an opportunity to support the local shelters and find homes for many good healthy animals that need love.  Do you have a pet?  Did you buy or adopt your pet?  When a friend is thinking of a pet do you suggest a local option over an animal farm or pet store?  Let’s talk about these things…

Most often a local shelter is much cheaper to adopt than buying a pet (advantage number one).  Shelters will also almost always have the pet spayed or neutered to prevent more unwanted animals.  I have three cats.  One came from a shelter.  The first one was a box of kittens dumped at a friends farm… she was the runt of the liter and would likely not make it on a farm outdoors, so we adopted her.  The second cat was a playmate for her… that really didn’t work out well but they tolerate each other.  The third cat was a rescue of sorts.  LONG story short a friend needed a home for 5 pets after a divorce… we took one in.  I don’t know many people with pets that haven’t gone with adoption, but it is always a suggestion.

What about you?  Tell me your thoughts in the comments or make your own Remember Me Thursday post and link it here so I can find it.  Let’s find those furbabies “furever” homes!

Contact your local shelter or the ASPCA for more information on adoption.

Never The Same

You should have seen

The look on his face

When death struck

It was not panicked

It was peaceful grace

A calm had overtaken him

As the rattle escaped his lips

I knew it was over

But as if something would happen

I called his name in vain

Tears stung at my eyes

The color was gone in his skin

**

Paramedics came

They shocked his cooling body

But it was merely a shell

He was gone

And my life has never been the same

I want to try something.  Let’s talk about things.  Things that matter, things are not so important and outright silly things.  Things that are strange and different, things that are timely, things that make us laugh or cry.  Things that are on your mind and mine.  And things that never crossed your mind.  Let’s talk….

Today is National Chocolate Milk Day, National No Excuses Day, and Ancestor Appreciation Day.  In 1854 the luxury ship the Artic was traveling through fog and had not taken extra precautions; it ended up crashing into another ship called the Vesta.  The crash and sinking caused the loss of 322 lives.  In 1938 Franklin Roosevelt wrote a letter to Adolph Hitler regarding the increased tensions in Europe hoping to avoid another war.

Today, however, is also World Tourism Day.  Have you ever gone on vacation to a “tourist trap?”  Was it just overpriced spending or was it worth the time there?  Let’s talk about these things…

When I was 17, I went to Nashville and had a ball.  Yes, it was kind of pricy and I went for Fan Fair, which was definitely a tourist trap, but I was a star struck kid, so I didn’t mind.  It was worth the time and would do it again, but then I think Fan Fair has now morphed into a different type of celebration but fun still the same.  All the museums and tours… I would do them again in a heartbeat.

Today, in 1580 Francis Drake became the first person to sail around the globe.  In 1928 the first mass produced car radios were made.  And in 1960 the first debate between Nixon and Kennedy took place.  Today is International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, National Chimichanga Day, National Dumpling Day and Lumber Jack Day.  Today is also National Johnny Appleseed Day.

John Chapman would become known as Johnny Appleseed as he traveled around the country and planted apple nurseries, fenced them in and left the neighbors in care of them.  He became well known for his love of nature and wildlife and of course apples.  What is your favorite way to eat apples?  Plain, with peanut butter, in a pie, a caramel or candy apple or something else?  Let’s talk about this…

I love apples.  I eat them many ways, plain, with a little salt, with some caramel sauce, apple pie, apple sauce and my favorite is toast or cinnamon raisin bread with apple butter.  How about you?  Let me know in the comments or write a post and leave the link here so I can find it.  Thanks for reading and I hope you’ll talk.

Keep Pulling

I struggle with pain

I struggle with loneliness

I struggle with sleep

I struggle with my past

I struggle with the future

Life is a constant tug of war

Trying to hold onto the happiness

While fighting with all my struggles

But I will pull on

I will not lose

Back to work or back to school, it is Monday again.  It starts the beginning of National Inclusion Week.  It is World Dream Day, National One-Hit Wonder Day, National Comic Book Day, Better Breakfast and Binge Day.  In 1789 the Bill of Rights passes through congress, in 1957 the Little Rock Nine begin their first full days of classes and in 1959 Eisenhower and Khrushchev meet in in the US for talks.  But back to talking about work… it is International Week of Happiness at Work.

Do you/Did you like your job?  Were you happy there or just getting a paycheck?  What was one thing about it that made you happy?  Let’s talk about these things…

I have a mixed answer.  When I first started and got over the new job jitters, I loved my job.  I loved what I did until the end but management and higher up changed so much in the 20 years that I cashiered it was far from the same place to work.  Until the last year or two when I started to get sick it was good, but then they got downright nasty about my time off.  Probably the one thing that I liked the most and still miss, is the people I got to know.  There were a couple of regular customers and some people I worked with that I hated to leave behind.  But cashiering I actually do miss.

Sunny Sunday – September 24

Today I decided to bring more light to the world.  Today I ask you to do the same thing.  Join me in posting something happy and upbeat, funny or serious but always sunny.  It can be poems, stories (real or fiction), pictures, quotes or music.  Let’s spread a little joy today.  Encourage each other with a little positivity.  If you want to spread that sunshine give me a link in the comments and we can light up the world together.  #SunnySunday

This week I had Bob Ross on my mind for some reason so I took a painters angle on the sunshine. I hope you like it!

Once Upon a Daybreak

The painter takes a stroke across the canvas

Blending the colors on the brush

Red and blue become a purple hue

She takes the paint beyond its purpose

Bringing the colors to life

Extracting emotions in the strokes

Subtly telling a story of a sunrise

With water absorbing the light

A day breaking on the horizon

With an explosion of colors and hopes

And a future in the distance too beautiful for words

I want to try something.  Let’s talk about things.  Things that matter, things are not so important and outright silly things.  Things that are strange and different, things that are timely, things that make us laugh or cry.  Things that are on your mind and mine.  And things that never crossed your mind.  Let’s talk….

How has your week been?  I hope you can end it with some good facts; let’s get started.  Today, in 1789 the first Supreme Court was created when George Washington signed the Judiciary Act.  And in 1948 Mildred Gillars aka “Axis Sally” pleads not guilty in court on the charge of treason.  It is World Bollywood Day, World Rivers Day, National Punctuation Day and Bluebird of Happiness Day.  And in 1991 it was a sad day I say.  A day of no play.  A time to try not to cry.  The death of Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss was also known as Theodor Geisel, and he was a prolific children’s book author.  His books have delighted children and tied the tongues of parents for years.  Today let’s remember his bright and sunny rhymes, his nonsensical words and colorful drawings.  Did you have a favorite either growing up or reading to your kids?  Were they different?  Let’s talk about these things…

I remember as a kid reading Hop on Pop and One Fish, Two Fish.  If I remember right, they were straight into the library, take a left around the center shelves and they were just ahead by the wall.  I would often read them during open library time.  Now with my daughter, we got a whole collection of Dr. Seuss books for her, and I loved reading The Foot Book to her.  And Wacky Wednesday was a favorite whenever we would visit grandma and grandpa’s house.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments or write your own post and give me a link here so I can find it. Thanks for reading and I hope you’ll talk.

Relive a little childhood innocence… here’s Wacky Wednesday!
